World Environment Day 2014

World Environment Day 2014

World Environment Day (WED) was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972. The first World Environment Day was celebrated in 1973, on the 5th of June. Since then, it is hosted every year by a different city with a different theme. The 2013 theme for World Environment Day was “Think.Eat.Save”, aimed to empower people to make informed choices about the food they eat and waste, so as to reduce the overall ecological impact due to the worldwide production of food.

The 2014 theme for World Environment Day, is in support of the UN designation of 2014 as the International Year of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in the context of climate change. The objectives are the understanding of the importance of SIDS and of the urgency to help protect the islands in the face of growing risks and vulnerabilities, particularly as a result of climate change. WED will be an excellent opportunity to raise a call for solidarity with the islands. The official slogan for the year 2014 is “Raise Your Voice, Not The Sea Level”.

“Planet Earth is our shared island, let us join forces to protect it.”, said UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon at the launch of the 2014 International Year of Small Islands and Developing States.

Every year, AES Bulgaria marks the World Environment Day together with the celebration of AES Safety Day. It is our firm belief that everyone from AES performs ones daily activities being “ALWAYS ON FOR ENVIRONMENT, on the job, at home and in our community”, which is the slogan of the Corporation for the World Environment Day 2014.
